This 82-year-old white female patient presented with bright red blood in her stool. Hemorrhoids have been known for many years. The patient was referred for colonoscopy in order to exclude a bleeding source in the lower intestinal segments.
The video recording shows different segments of the colon, which is not very well cleansed. Of note is the dark brown to black discoloration.
Upon questioning, the patient admitted using laxaives for many years. The discoloration of the mucosa in patients with melanosis coli can range from light brown to nearly black.
